Volunteering Opportunities for Bike Races

Volunteers are the backbone of Calgary’s cycling events, ensuring races run smoothly while fostering a strong sense of community. At BikeRacing.ca, we encourage everyone—cyclists and non-cyclists alike—to get involved in volunteering for bike races. Whether you’re looking to support the legendary Wednesday Night Series (WNS) or other local events, volunteering is a rewarding way to contribute to Calgary’s vibrant cycling scene.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering at bike races offers numerous benefits:

Volunteer Opportunities with Crankmasters

The Calgary Crankmasters Cycling Club offers several opportunities to volunteer during their events, including the Wednesday Night Series (WNS) and Stampede Road Race Rodeo. Volunteering is an essential part of the club’s operations and helps build a supportive cycling community.

Wednesday Night Series (WNS)

The WNS is Calgary’s longest-running mid-week road race series, featuring time trials, hill climbs, criteriums, and more. Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring these events run smoothly. Each WNS race counts as 1 volunteer credit toward fulfilling Crankmasters’ annual requirement.

Roles:

Marshals, timekeepers, registration assistants, cornering support.

Commitment:

Evening shifts lasting approximately 2–4 hours.

Stampede Road Race Rodeo

This annual event requires additional volunteer support due to its larger scale. Volunteering for one day counts as 2 credits, while volunteering both days fulfills all yearly volunteer obligations for Crankmasters members.

Roles:

Marshaling, course setup/cleanup, timing assistance.

Perks:

Other benefits like bonus points toward club awards or recognition at club events.

How Volunteer Credits Work

If you’re a Crankmasters member, you are required to complete three volunteer credits per year. Here’s how it works:

Your volunteer deposit will be refunded at the end of the year if you fulfill your obligations. Bonus points are awarded for bringing additional volunteers!

Volunteer Opportunities in Calgary

For Crankmasters

Wednesday Night Series

Thinking about volunteering in Calgary? BikeRacing.ca is always looking for volunteers for the Wednesday Night Series (WNS) races, organized by Crankmasters. This page is for anyone curious about what it’s like to help out at a local bike race. You don’t need to be a cyclist. You just need a bit of time, a willingness to help, and maybe a bit of curiosity.

Volunteer Roles at WNS Races

There are a few main volunteer roles at these events. Some are simple, and others require a bit more training. We try to match people with what feels right for them, and sometimes, you end up doing something you didn’t expect, and that’s not a bad thing.

First Aid Volunteer

Every race needs at least one first aid volunteer. If you already have your certification, that’s great. If not, we can help you get it. Some people do this because they want to learn a new skill, others because they just like being helpful. You never really know when first aid will come in handy, either at a race or somewhere else.

General Volunteer

General volunteers help with setup, registration, marshalling, or just being a friendly face. No experience is needed. Sometimes you’re busy, sometimes you’re waiting for something to happen. It’s rarely the same twice. Some people like unpredictability, and others prefer to have a set job. Either way, we try to make it work.

Who Volunteers?

You’ll see all kinds of people at these races. Some are students looking for volunteer hours, others are seniors who want to stay active, and some just want to try something new or maybe meet a few folks. We ask for volunteers to be 18 years or older, mostly for insurance reasons. That’s just the way things are now.

Youth Volunteers and Newcomers

We’ve had youth volunteers (18+) and newcomers to Calgary join us. Sometimes they’re not sure what to expect, but most find a place pretty quickly. Some stick around for years, others just try it once. Both are fine.

Senior Volunteers

Wise folks often bring a lot of experience and patience. Some like to marshal, others help with paperwork, or just offer support. It’s a good way to stay connected to the community.

Why Volunteer?

People volunteer for all sorts of reasons. Some want to give back. Others need volunteer hours for school or work. A few just want to get out of the house. There isn’t really a right reason. You might learn a new skill, meet people, or just feel good at the end of the night. We’re happy to provide reference letters or sign off on hours if you need them.

What You Get

You get volunteer experience, maybe a new skill, and sometimes a story or two. Some nights are busy, others are slow. You get to see the races up close, and sometimes you end up making a new friend. Not every job is exciting, but most people find something they like.

Flexible Commitment

We try to keep things flexible. Some people come every week, others just once or twice a season. If you’re not sure, you can try it and see how it feels—there’s no pressure.

Ready to Try Volunteering?

If any of this sounds interesting, or even if you’re just a little bit curious, we’d love to hear from you. Maybe you’re thinking, “I’m not sure if I’ll fit in,” or “I’ve never done this before.” That’s okay. Most of us started the same way. Just reach out, or drop by on a Wednesday evening and have a look around. You might find it’s exactly what you were looking for, or maybe it’s just a nice way to spend a few hours. Either way, you’re welcome to join us.

How to Get Started

If you’re interested, you can fill out the form (we promise not to bug you with anything other than volunteering for the bike races or sharing your contacts with any third party other than Crankmasters Cycling Club Calgary). If you have questions, ask. Sometimes, people aren’t sure what they want to do until they try, and that’s fine. There’s always something to do and always someone new to meet.
