Criterium Standings to June 7, 2016

Written By on June 8, 2016

No major shakeups to the top of the standings, but we do have Chris Cameron (MIVA) and Derek Jonson (MIVA) both clawing their way up in the rankings. Nick Kupiak (Broad Street Cycles), Janna Gillick (Team ATAC) and Ayden Houle (MIVA) are still leading their respective categories. Big thank you to the volunteers who stepped in at the last minute to marshal the corners. These events can’t happen without volunteers so please consider taking a night off and lending a hand.

As usual, riders will line up at 7PM at Boxwood Road in Nanaimo. Sign-on is at 6:30PM at the entrance to Longwood Brewery. Nick Kupiak (Broad Street Cycles) is crushing it with James Sage (MIVA) hot on his heels. Last week’s race saw Mike Sevcov (Cycle Therapy) starting to close the gap on John Lam (MIVA). Lee Zavarise (MIVA) has been steadily hanging in there and has now moved into fifth position. Neil Bryant (Cycle Therapy) has been using his explosive sprint to power himself into sixth position.

An early evening thunder storm rolled in around 5pm, however it left the TT course unscathed while northern Nanaimo was getting flooded. With 29 people signed up, 21 actually made it to the start line. Dave Steen reported high winds on the course tonight with a quick return trip after getting hit hard on the way out to the turn around. A smaller field on a slightly cooler evening, but some fast results put down nonetheless. It’s pretty rare to see our mens 40k course record go down, and tonight was the closest anyone has come in a few years. Courtenay native Nigel Ellsay (Silber Pro Cycling) made his debut on the MIVA course and set the second best time ever with a 53:09. Curtis Dearden’s (2013 Canadian TT Champion) holds the record at 52:59 from June 11, 2014. Paul Auton took second place in 58:31, and Sean Lunny (RCC) third in 1:02:21…edging out arch nemesis Joel Lutz by only 29.4 seconds. Super Duper Hill Climb Recap

Super Duper Hill Climb Recap The idea was simple, ride all of the MIVA hill climbs in one go. Basically up every big hill in Nanaimo and regroup at Whitesails brewing afterwards for food, beer and stories. 61km and 1200m of climbing in one shot. Despite the event being held on mothers day we had twelve riders show up ready and eager to tackle the challenge. Prior to the race start we discussed the course.  Despite the route being laid out on Strava the idea was to hit all five checkpoints in whatever order they wanted by whatever route they? Read More

Coal City Cycles Criterium Standings

Written By on May 10, 2016

After four weeks of criteriums, we’ve tallied the results! Given the rain (no points awarded) and the neutralized finish (two points for all starters), the series is still wide open. A few notes on the categories and scoring. Like in previous years, we split the men and the women and the adults from the U19s from the final standings and assign points as follows: 12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-2-2. As in, all finishers outside of the top nine receive 2 points. If you feel that there are any errors in the scoring that could materially affect the year-end results, please contact us and we’d be?
